Monday 19 November 2018
Victorian Liberal Nationals will invest $1.85 million to fight fruit fly
Tim McCurdy MP, Member for Ovens Valley was joined by the Australian Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, the Honourable David Littleproud, in the Ovens Valley today.
Minister Littleproud visited the Ovens Valley to make a national fruit fly control announcement.
“I’m delighted to join David Littleproud today at his announcement of a national approach to fruit fly control,” said Mr McCurdy.
“This national program is a huge step forward in fruit fly control. Fruit fly don’t recognise borders.”
The Federal Coalition Government fruit fly management program announced today is a $16.9 million national program.
The program will see the Federal Government lead national fruit fly management.
There will be a national approach to management and trade regulation of fruit fly, and the program will work with the states to improve fruit fly management and improve research and development.
“The Victorian Liberal Nationals in government will commit Victoria’s share, $1.85 million, to this national program,” confirmed Mr McCurdy.
“Queensland fruit fly has been a huge issue for Victoria’s horticultural industry. It costs the industry millions every year in control measures and production loss.
“This program is good news for our producers and ultimately all of us as consumers.
“Horticulture is a key industry in the Ovens Valley so it’s great to be part of a team that is working to stand up and fight fruit fly in a strong, national, coordinated way.”
