Australia Day - Letter to the Editor

Tuesday 31 January 2017

Australia Day was celebrated in many different ways across the Ovens Valley electorate and I was honoured to attend numerous events in our communities.

This year I visited some of our smaller townships where Aussie pride and community spirit were on full display.

It was a great start to the day at Boorhaman where residents came together for a community breakfast, flag raising and presentation.

I then headed to Glenrowan where people gathered for a barbecue, speeches and flag raising and Local Achiever of the Year awards were presented.

At North Wangaratta, Australia Day was celebrated with the launch of community story boards detailing historic elements of the area. The project is the result of hundreds of hours of volunteer work, so it was fitting that it was unveiled on Australia Day.

At Cheshunt I enjoyed the evening gathering and presentations.

At every event I attended there were people supporting each other, cooking together and proudly raising the Australian flag.

Australia is a land of opportunity full of resilient people. I hope you all enjoyed Australia Day and the many ways it was celebrated across this great part of Victoria.
