Labor again treats CFA volunteers with contempt
Wednesday 29 May 2019
Nationals Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy has condemned Labor’s reintroduction of legislation in Parliament to break up the CFA and casting aside the tens of thousands of CFA volunteers.
Speaking from Parliament today, Mr McCurdy said that in the Ovens Valley and across regional Victoria, every person is aware how vital the CFA is in the community.
“There are over 50 CFAs in the Ovens Valley electorate. From Katamatite to Porepunkah and from Whitfield to Burramine - we all rely on the CFA and our volunteers are treated with the utmost respect,” he said.
“But the city-centric Daniel Andrews Government that has walked all over the CFA for the past four years has once again come after our volunteers with the reintroduction of this bill.
“This proposed legislation shows utmost disrespect to those volunteers who have protected Victorian for more than 100 years, along with Labor’s complete lack of understanding of country communities and the esteem in which the CFA is held.”
Mr McCurdy said that the bill is seeking to merge the CFA and the MFB to create Fire Rescue Victoria, staffed only by career firefighters and leaving the CFA to become a volunteer-only body.
“Daniel Andrews’ is showing his allegiance to the United Firefighters Union over the CFA by tearing it apart and giving the union control over the conditions that volunteers will have to work under,” he said
“We have continued to lose CFA volunteers every year since 2014 as they bow out due to cuts in funding and the endless pursuit by Daniel Andrews to tear apart their organization to help out his union mates.
“This puts the lives and safety of regional communities at risk.”
Mr McCurdy said that the Liberal Nationals Coalition will continue to stand by CFA volunteers to ensure their rights and Victorian families’ lives are best protected.
“Here in the Ovens Valley and across the state we need to protect those volunteers who protect us.”
