Regional rail announcement applauded
Friday 16 March 2018
Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and Leader of the Nationals Michael McCormack today announced a further $135 million to complete required upgrades on the North East Rail Line and deliver the Inland Rail.
This amount is in addition to the $100 million committed by the Federal Coalition Government in late 2017.
Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy applauded Mr McCormack and the Federal Coalition for supporting the necessary upgrades on the North East Line and his commitment to the Inland Rail.
“The rail funding agreement the Nationals at both Federal and State levels have worked on, has been secured by the Nationals in Victoria working with our federal counterparts which is terrific,” said Mr McCurdy.
“Our recently announced Victorian Coalition election policy of replacing existing trains on the North East Line with new rolling stock, a commitment of $633 million, addresses the reliability of the North East Line.
“The Nationals team in Victoria have worked hard to have our local rail issues addressed.
“This is an example of the success the Nationals have in working for the best interests of regional and rural Victoria.”
Mr McCurdy is calling on the Andrew’s Labor Government to step up to do more than just sign the Inland Rail Bilateral Agreement, to get on with the upgrades required on the North East Line, and meet the Coalition commitment to replacing the existing trains.
“I congratulate Mr McCormack on this regional rail announcement and call on the Andrew’s Labor government to now step up and match the Coalition commitment to new trains.”
