Liberal Nationals introduce Bill to protect CFA volunteers
Thursday 9 February 2017
The Liberal Nationals this week introduced legislation to protect CFA volunteers, Nationals Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy said.
Mr McCurdy said that in the Legislative Council yesterday, the Liberal Nationals moved an amendment to the Country Fire Authority Act 1958 that aims to protect the rights of CFA volunteers who are currently under siege by the Andrews Labor Government.
The bill will amend the Country Fire Authority Act 1958 to:
- Recognise the CFA as a volunteer-based organisation;
- Recognise the authority’s requirement to have regard to the Volunteer Charter and the principles and commitment contained therein;
- Restrict the authority entering any deed, agreement or arrangement that may adversely affect volunteers and or avoid the application of any Commonwealth or Victorian law.
“This Bill aims to strengthen the Volunteer Charter signed by the then Liberal Nationals Government in 2011 that the current Labor Government has since allowed to be weakened,” Mr McCurdy said.
“The Liberal Nationals are standing with our volunteers and fighting for their rights.
“We will continue to work to protect our 57,000 hardworking volunteers who protect the lives and property of millions of Victorians.”
Mr McCurdy said that in the midst of the fire season, the importance of CFA volunteers was abundantly clear to all.
“These brave men and women give up their time and risk their lives for us, and the Andrews Labor Government treats them with utter contempt,” he said.
“There are more than 50 CFAs in the Ovens Valley electorate. From Katamatite to Porepunkah and from Whitfield to Burramine these volunteers have endured one of the most difficult times in the organisation’s history because of the Andrews Labor Government.
“The Coalition made a promise to protect Victorian volunteer firefighters and we will continue to do all that is possible to fulfil that.”
