Liberal Nationals to ban Anzac Day property auctions prior to 1pm

Thursday 20 April 2017

The announcement that a Liberal Nationals Government will ban the holding of property auctions on Anzac Day, prior to 1pm has been welcomed by Member for Ovens Valley and Shadow Minister for Veterans, Tim McCurdy.

Mr McCurdy said it was appalling some real estate agents in Victoria had been holding property auctions on the morning of Anzac Day.

“Anzac Day is a time for commemoration, not property sales and the fact that some real estate agents have been holding auctions in the morning on this day is completely disrespectful,” Mr McCurdy said.

“There are already significant restrictions in place regarding shops, cinemas and entertainment trading on Anzac Day before 1pm and the Liberal Nationals will extend these to apply to property auctions.”

Mr McCurdy said the auction ban had the support of the Victorian Branch of the RSL.

“The Victorian Branch of the RSL was consulted on this and has welcomed the change to preserve the intent of the Act to keep Victorians free to participate in Anzac Day services and marches.”

He said that throughout Victoria and across the Ovens Valley there were many opportunities for people to honour those who have served our country and made the ultimate sacrifice.

“RSL sub-branches throughout the region will hold services on Anzac Day and I would like to encourage as many people as possible to attend and honour the sacrifices and contributions of all our service men and women and their families.”
