Liberal-Nationals will back Yarrawonga bridge green route

Thursday 18 October 2018

An elected Liberal Nationals Government will support the green route as the preferred route for the new Yarrawonga-Mulwala Bridge crossing, Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy announced today.

Mr McCurdy joined Shadow Minister for Roads and Infrastructure David Hodgett in Yarrawonga to announce that if elected to Government in November the Liberal Nationals would support the green route as the preferred route for the new bridge, in line with the community’s choice.

“I have always supported the majority view of the Yarrawonga community that the preferred choice for the new bridge is the green route,” Mr McCurdy said.

“In 2014 the then Coalition Government announced the green route for the crossing would be supported. When the Andrews Labor Government was elected it controversially overturned this decision, going against the local community.

“I am pleased to announce that an elected Liberal Nationals Government will support the view of the people.”

Mr McCurdy said that in September last year a plebiscite was held by Moira Shire Council on the preferred route for the bridge crossing.

“The result was a resounding three-to-one in favour of the green route,” he said.

“The Yarrawonga community has indicated time and time again that it wants the green route for the new bridge.”

Mr McCurdy said despite this Labor chose to go against the wishes of local residents by not supporting the green route.

“I have always listened to Yarrawonga residents and advocated on their behalf for the green route.”
