McCurdy calls for Vic Government to keep its hands off Somers Camp
Thursday, 3rd March 2022
Nationals Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy recently spoke in Parliament calling for the Victorian Government to stop meddling with the renowned 60+ year old Somers Camp Program.
In Parliament Mr McCurdy said, “The Victorian Government needs to keep their hands off our prominent Somers School Camp Program.”
He continued, “I previously spoke on this issue back in December last year and the Victorian Government has become more and more ignorant by trying to fix something that is not broken.”
The Victorian Government plans on introducing various policy changes, some of which effectively reduce the number of days students will attend the camp from a nine-full day program to a five-day approach.
Mr McCurdy added, “If the very individuals who actually facilitate and run Somers Camp year after year believe these changes are not in the best interest for its students, the Victorian Government needs to put this consideration at the forefront before implementing non-negotiable changes.”
He continued, “Somers Camp is more than just a school excursion; instead, it has been and continues to be a life changing experience for generations of students across Victoria.
“I urge the Victorian Government to think of our students, and camp facilitators who work tiresomely year after year to make this program such a memorable experience.”
