Red Cross recruiting now for emergency services volunteers
Tuesday 10 October 2017
Nationals Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy is encouraging local residents to consider becoming an Australian Red Cross emergency services volunteer.
“The Australian Red Cross is now recruiting emergency services volunteers so it’s a great time for people to attend a local information session to find out what is involved,” Mr McCurdy said.
“Volunteers are trained to provide support in the local area, throughout Victoria and potentially Australia-wide in times of national emergencies.”
Mr McCurdy said Red Cross volunteers in emergency services roles not only help people who have experienced a disaster but also help them prepare before a disaster strikes and recover afterwards.
“Red Cross emergency service volunteers are best known for helping people during a disaster - they might greet people at evacuation centres, go door-to-door in communities following a flood or fire to check how people are coping or register people to help them find family and friends,” he said.
“Emergency Services volunteers are also essential in helping communities prepare for emergencies and with recovery after a disaster has past, helping run community projects and supporting people with their healing process.”
Mr McCurdy said information sessions for those interested in volunteering would soon be held in Shepparton and Numurkah.
The information sessions will be held at Legacy House, 20 Edward Street, Shepparton on Saturday 28 October at 10am and Monday 30 October at 7.30pm.
An information session will be held in Numurkah on Saturday 28 October at 1pm at the Senior Citizens Club, 38 McCaskill Street.
Details on becoming an emergency services volunteer are also available at www.redcross.org.au/volunteering or by calling 1800 232 969.
