Wangaratta basketball needs some extra bounce
Tuesday 21 May 2019
Nationals Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy is calling on the Daniel Andrews Government once again for funding to build a new basketball stadium as part of Wangaratta High Schools master plan.
Mr McCurdy said five million dollars is needed to complete stage 4 of the school’s plan which would see a new stadium built with double basketball courts for use by the school and the community.
“This funding would greatly assist the Wangaratta Basketball Association,” he said.
“Basketball in Wangaratta has been growing for many years and an upgrade would provide more courts to accommodate the increasing player numbers – not to mention encourage participation in sport and recreation.”
Mr McCurdy said that he had witnessed firsthand the need for more courts.
“Last year the Leader of the Nationals and Shadow Minister for Regional Victoria and Decentralisation, Peter Walsh and I attended the Association’s junior tournament,” he said.
“There were 122 teams and over 1000 players with just eleven courts available.
There was an obvious need for a new facility to accommodate the tournament and also be available to the school and other community members and events.”
Mr McCurdy said that the Labor Government had an opportunity to give growing regional communities in Victoria more of a fair go.
The budget will be delivered on 27 May.
