The Nationals' Member for Ovens Valley, Tim McCurdy, has criticised the Allan Labor Government for slashing the Power Saving Bonus just as Victorian families face soaring energy costs.

From 25 August, the Power Saving Bonus will drop to a $100 rebate, less than half the previous $250 amount; and will be limited to concession card holders only. This change means fewer households across Ovens Valley will receive any relief.

“Cutting the Power Saving Bonus at a time when electricity prices continue to climb is a real blow to families trying to make ends meet,” Mr McCurdy said.

“Labor’s decision excludes many working families, pensioners without concession cards, and low-income earners who desperately need help but now receive nothing.

“Despite promises that renewable energy would reduce power bills, the reality is quite the opposite, costs keep rising and families are feeling the pinch.”

Mr McCurdy also raised concerns about the rebate’s digital only application process, which creates barriers for those without internet access or the skills to apply online.

“If you’re eligible and need help, I encourage you to reach out to your local neighbourhood house or contact my office directly.”

The Power Saving Bonus is available to electricity account holders with a Health Care Card, Pensioner or Veterans’ Affairs Concession Card, or a DVA Gold Card. Applications open online on 25 August at www.compare.energy.vic.gov.au.

Labor can't manage energy, and Victorians are paying the price.
