The Nationals’ Member for Ovens Valley, Tim McCurdy, says that while the Victorian Government has finally scrapped land tax on a Katamatite property following his intervention, the case highlights the need to remain vigilant against Labor’s ongoing tax overreach.

Recently, Mr McCurdy raised in Parliament the case of a Katamatite landowner who was hit with a land tax bill based on an inflated government valuation of $51,000 for a small, landlocked block, despite it being purchased for just $3,000.

Following public exposure and pressure from McCurdy, the Allan Labor Government has now removed the land tax from the property.

“I always suspected this was wrong from the beginning,” Mr McCurdy said. “But the fact is, this should never have happened in the first place. Without speaking up, the owner would still be paying tax on a block that isn’t even fit for development.”

Mr McCurdy warned that while this is a positive outcome, it’s the exception rather than the rule under the current government.

“This was a clear cash grab by a city centric government desperate for revenue.

Every Victorian should be ready to challenge unfair taxes, because if you say nothing, you’ll pay the price.”

He said this case proves wins are possible, but only if bad decisions are exposed and fought every step of the way.

Labor can't manage money, and regional Victorians are paying the price.
