The Nationals’ Member for Ovens Valley, Tim McCurdy, has voiced his deep concern following the passing of the National Electricity (Victoria) Amendment (VicGrid Stage 2 Reform) Bill 2025 in the Legislative Council on Thursday, August 28.

Mr McCurdy said the legislation represents another blow to regional communities, granting VicGrid coercive powers over landholders without adequately addressing the need for genuine consultation, fair compensation, or proper investment in rural Victoria.

“This bill further centralises decision-making and strips away protections for landholders,” Mr McCurdy said. “Farmers and regional communities are already carrying the greatest share of responsibility in the transition to renewable energy. This legislation only reinforces a system where rural Victoria shoulders the burden while the benefits are channelled elsewhere.”

Mr McCurdy stressed that local residents are not opposed to renewable energy or the transition process but are demanding a fair and balanced approach that respects property rights and safeguards communities.

“Regional Victorians understand the importance of energy transition, but they are tired of being treated as an afterthought. It’s not acceptable for people’s homes and livelihoods to be disregarded in the rush to tick a box on government targets,” he said.

The bill passed its third reading in the Legislative Council with 21 votes in favour and 16 against.

Mr McCurdy said the fight for fairness was far from over.

“The Nationals’ will continue to stand up for regional landholders, ensuring that their voices are heard and their rights protected.

There must be a better way forward that balances the state’s energy needs with respect for the communities who are most directly impacted.”
