The Nationals' Member for Ovens Valley, Tim McCurdy, has welcomed the easing of travel warnings in and around Porepunkah and Bright following the recent large-scale police operation.

Mr McCurdy said the news would be a welcome relief for locals and businesses who have endured weeks of uncertainty and financial strain.

“It is fantastic that travel warnings are being lifted and that visitors can once again return to Porepunkah and Bright,” Mr McCurdy said.

“These towns rely heavily on tourism, and while we know people will be delighted to come back and enjoy what this beautiful part of Victoria has to offer, we must also acknowledge the very real financial pain our businesses have suffered.”

Mr McCurdy said many operators in the tourism, hospitality and retail sectors had seen cancellations, lost bookings and sharp declines in trade during what should have been a busy time.

“I have raised on multiple occasions with various levels of Government, including in Parliament once more last week, the need for a dedicated support package for businesses in Porepunkah, Bright and surrounding communities,” he said.

“Unfortunately, to date, no financial assistance has been offered despite the significant hardship locals have endured. These businesses have done it tough and will take time to recover, they cannot simply bounce back overnight.”

Mr McCurdy encouraged visitors to return as soon as possible and show their support.

“Our community is resilient, and the spirit of our towns is strong. We’re open for business and ready to welcome you back,” he said.

“Now more than ever, we need people to come, stay, eat, shop and experience the very best that regional Victoria has to offer. Together we can help local businesses get back on their feet.”
