The Nationals' Member for Ovens Valley, Tim McCurdy, has welcomed the activation of Commonwealth Bank’s Emergency Assistance package to support local families, farmers and businesses impacted by the ongoing bushfires across Victoria.

Mr McCurdy said many people across Ovens Valley and surrounding regions are facing enormous uncertainty, with homes, livelihoods and businesses under threat, and financial support measures like these can provide some much-needed breathing space during an incredibly difficult time.

“Bushfires take a devastating toll on regional communities, and the stress doesn’t end once the flames are contained,” Mr McCurdy said. “I welcome Commonwealth Bank stepping up to support customers by offering flexible financial assistance tailored to individual circumstances.”

The Emergency Assistance package includes customised payment arrangements for home, business and personal loans, temporary overdrafts or credit limit increases, waived fees and charges, early access to term deposits including Farm Management Term Deposits, and support for damaged or temporary EFTPOS terminals for local businesses.

Emergency accommodation may also be available for eligible customers with Home Insurance provided by Hollard and distributed by CommBank, along with assistance directing insurance claims.

Mr McCurdy encouraged anyone affected to reach out early and discuss their situation with their bank.

“I strongly encourage locals who are doing it tough to make contact and seek support, you don’t have to navigate this alone,” he said.

Customers can access assistance through the CommBank app or by calling 1800 314 695, with further information available at commbank.com.au/support/emergency-assistance.

Mr McCurdy also reminded the community to remain vigilant against scams during emergencies and to prioritise safety, following advice from emergency services.

“For emergency help, contact the SES on 132 500, or call 000 in a life-threatening situation,” he said.
