The Nationals' Member for Ovens Valley, Tim McCurdy, says the conclusion of the six-month manhunt in north-east Victoria marks the end of a prolonged and challenging chapter for local communities.

Mr McCurdy said the situation had created ongoing disruption for residents and businesses across the region, particularly in and around Porepunkah.

“For more than six months, our community has dealt with significant uncertainty and disruption,” Mr McCurdy said.

“This marks the end of a long-running situation that has impacted many across our region. While this brings closure to the broader community, we recognise that for the families of the two police officers previously killed, this outcome brings little comfort.”

Mr McCurdy paid tribute to Senior Constable Vadim De Waart-Hottart and Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson, who lost their lives in the line of duty.

“Their service and sacrifice will not be forgotten. They served their community with courage and dedication, and we honour their memory.”

Mr McCurdy also acknowledged the work of Victoria Police and specialist units involved in the operation.

“Our police have worked tirelessly under difficult and dangerous circumstances over many months. Their professionalism and commitment to protecting the community should be recognised.”

Mr McCurdy said that while this brings an end to this chapter, the focus must now be on supporting one another and moving forward.

“If this situation has raised concerns for you or you are finding it difficult, I encourage you to reach out to my office for support.”

“It is now time for our community to move forward together.”
