Running on fumes: Nationals fight for regional fuel supply

The Nationals' are calling on regional Victorians to help highlight growing fuel shortages, launching a new initiative aimed at ensuring country communities are not left behind.

Residents are encouraged to report local fuel supply issues through the “No Fuel Here” website, a tool designed to map shortages in real time and strengthen advocacy to both state and federal governments. Submissions will also be directed to the relevant federal MP to ensure concerns are heard at every level.

The Nationals' Member for Ovens Valley, Tim McCurdy, said the initiative reflects mounting concern across regional communities, where access to fuel is critical for everyday life and local industries.

“In regional Victoria, fuel isn’t optional, it’s essential to keep our communities moving and our farms operating,” Mr McCurdy said.

“With reports of fuel stations running dry and uncertainty around supply, particularly as farmers head into a crucial cropping period, the situation is becoming increasingly serious.”

Mr McCurdy said farmers and transport operators are already feeling the strain, with flow-on impacts likely to affect food production and prices if the issue is not addressed urgently.

“Our agricultural sector underpins not only regional economies but the nation’s food security,” he said.

“That’s why it’s vital governments work closely with suppliers to guarantee consistent fuel access where it’s needed most.”

“The government needs to act now, regional communities are being left to run on empty.”

Mr McCurdy urged locals to report shortages, saying accurate, on-the-ground information would help drive action.

“By sharing what’s happening in your area, you’re helping ensure regional voices are heard and prioritised.”
