The Nationals' Member for Ovens Valley, Tim McCurdy, has expressed his deep sorrow and heartfelt support for Victorian families, farmers and communities impacted by the devastating bushfires burning across the state.
“These fires have torn through towns, farmland and bush, destroying homes, livelihoods and thousands of hectares of land,” Mr McCurdy said. “My thoughts are with every family who has lost a home, every farmer who has lost stock, and every community now facing an incredibly difficult road to recovery.”
Mr McCurdy paid tribute to the tireless efforts of volunteer and career firefighters, emergency services personnel and support crews working in dangerous and exhausting conditions.
“Our firefighters and emergency responders are doing extraordinary work under extreme pressure,” he said. “Victorians owe them an enormous debt of gratitude.”
Mr McCurdy acknowledged the $19.5 million immediate support package jointly announced by the state and federal governments, saying while any assistance is appreciated, it falls well short of what will be required to rebuild shattered communities.
“This package is not nearly enough to address the scale of devastation we are seeing, but it is a start,” he said. “There must be a strong and ongoing commitment to ensure families, farmers and communities receive the support they need long after the fires are out.”
The package includes $10 million to help deliver fodder to farmers suffering significant livestock losses, $1.5 million for emergency accommodation, and $1 million to support disaster recovery mental health services.
Bushfire-affected residents are encouraged to seek assistance through Services Victoria, where emergency relief payments, accommodation support and recovery services can be accessed. Farmers can also obtain help through agricultural support services and rural relief organisations, while up-to-date warnings and safety information are available via VicEmergency.
“These fires have caused enormous heartbreak,” Mr McCurdy said. “My commitment is to stand with our communities, advocate for stronger support, and ensure no one is left behind in recovery.”
