The Nationals’ Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy says the loss of the MotoGP from Phillip Island is yet another stark example of the Allan Labor Government’s chronic financial mismanagement and failure to stand up for regional Victoria.
After 29 events at Phillip Island, the confirmation that this will be the final year of the MotoGP represents a devastating blow to regional communities and small businesses. The event delivers an estimated $54.6 million in economic impact, including $29.4 million in direct local spending, and supports 284 full-time jobs. Its loss will be felt far beyond Bass Coast, sending a chilling message about Victoria’s ability to retain world-class events.
“Labor had years to renegotiate this contract and failed,” Mr McCurdy said. “This is what happens when a government cannot manage money, cannot plan ahead and cannot be trusted to protect regional jobs.”
“With billions lost through waste and mismanagement, it’s no wonder Victoria can’t afford to keep major events,” Mr McCurdy said. “Regional Victorians are paying the price for Labor’s failures, and these communities deserve far better.”
Mr McCurdy said only a change of government would restore confidence, protect major events and ensure regional Victoria gets its fair share of opportunity and investment.
