From centre stage to sidelines: Commonwealth Games disaster

The Nationals' Member for Ovens Valley, Tim McCurdy, has expressed deep frustration and disappointment as the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which should have been showcasing regional Victoria this week, are now nothing but a costly missed opportunity.
“This week should have seen our regions buzzing with visitors, excitement, and economic activity, providing a once-in-a-generation boost to tourism, hospitality, and local businesses,” Mr McCurdy said.
“Instead, nearly $600 million of taxpayers’ money has been spent on an event that never happened. That money could have been invested in our regional roads, hospitals, schools, and community services; areas that desperately need support and improvement.”
He said the cancellation highlighted more than just financial waste.
“This isn’t just about missed sporting events. It’s about broken promises, poor planning, and regions being overlooked. Regional Victorians deserved a lasting legacy of opportunity, investment, and growth. Instead, they’ve been left behind, while vital projects remain underfunded and communities continue to struggle.”
“Victorians worked hard to support this event, and our regions should have been put front and centre. What we’ve got instead is a Commonwealth Games disaster that will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.”
Labor can't manage money, and Victorians are paying the price.
