The Nationals Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy has slammed the Allan Labor Government for letting Victoria’s debt spiral out of control – with taxpayers set to fork out $28.9 million every single day in interest by 2028–29.
Mr McCurdy said that money, wasted on repayments, could be changing lives across North East Victoria.
“Just one day of Labor’s interest bill could build new ambulance stations, deliver dozens of regional housing units, upgrade rural school facilities, or fully fund childcare access for hundreds of families,” Mr McCurdy said.
“Imagine the Bright Hospital upgrade funded in a day, Yarrawonga P-12’s desperately needed upgrades twice over, a new dialysis and hospital upgrade for Cobram, or millions into social and affordable housing in Wangaratta – each paid for in just one day.
“Instead, it’s going straight into the pockets of lenders because Labor can’t manage money.”
With net debt forecast to blow out to $194 billion, Mr McCurdy said the government’s failure to rein in spending is robbing regional communities of the investment they urgently need.
“This level of waste is unacceptable – especially when local hospitals are under pressure, our roads are deteriorating, and young families are crying out for services.”
“North East Victoria deserves better than being left behind while the government’s chequebook spirals.”
Mr McCurdy said The Nationals would restore responsible economic management and direct funding to where it’s needed most, in local communities.
“We need real investment in people – not investing in paying off Labor’s bad decisions.”
